Causes of Damp, Mould/Mold or Condensation

Causes of Damp, Mould/Mold or Condensation

Excess moisture indoors can be caused by condensation. When the air indoors can't hold any more moisture condensation forms. Cooking, showering, drying clothes indoors, and breathing without adequate ventilation can all cause excess moisture. Droplets can form on indoor surfaces such as mirrors, windowsills, walls and ceilings, wooden furniture, wardrobes and cupboards particularly when they're cold and there is no air movement.

You can help prevent the build-up of condensation, damp and mould/mold by:

  • Putting lids on saucepans.
  • Drying washing outside.
  • Avoiding using paraffin or bottled gas heaters.
  • Opening the bedroom window for 15 minutes each morning.
  • Making sure your home is well insulated and ventilated.
  • Heating your home a little more
  • Ventilating rooms regularly and leaving doors open allowing air to circulate will help reduce or remove the problem of condensation, mould/mold and damp.
  • When cooking, showering or bathing, opening the window, putting the fan or dehumidifier on and closing the door of the room you're in.

Removal of Damp, Mould/Mold or Condensation

Once you've identified and fixed the source of moisture or stopped a leak, repairs may be needed to improve ventilation. After your home has been repaired, or if your house is damp because it's newly built, it may take weeks of drying, heating and ventilation to dry out the walls, floors, woodwork and ceilings to reduce further damage. This can be achieved with the use of dehumidifiers, fans and drying equipment supplied by STANLEY STEAMER Hire.

STANLEY STEAMER can professionally dry your home & buildings, furniture & contents using suitable drying equipment. You can rent Dehumidifiers, rent Fans, Air Movers, Heaters & Moisture Meters and much more.

Mould/Mold/Damp/Condensation Tips, until help arrives:

  • Protect yourself from mould/mold spores by wearing goggles, long rubber gloves and a mask that covers your nose and mouth.
  • Open the windows but keep doors closed to prevent spores spreading to other areas of the house.

  • Don't try to remove the mould/mold yourself if it’s caused by sewage or other contaminated water.
  • Don't enter rooms if the ceiling is wet and sagging.
